The United States, like much of the world, is experiencing an epidemic of obesity and obesity-related disorders, the most notable of which is diabetes mellitus. Yale has a long tradition of investigation in the areas of metabolism, diabetes, and weight regulation, having helped define the roles of hormones in appetite and contributed such advances to care as the insulin pump. Yale research programs are now focused on the autoimmune generation of juvenile onset diabetes, neural control of eating, the metabolic effects of obesity, and the genesis and consequences of insulin resistance associated with the most common form of diabetes.
