Infectious diseases, once thought to have been nearly vanquished by vaccines and antibiotics, have reappeared as a research priority. This transformation has occurred as we have learned that microorganisms are as facile in developing antibiotic resistance as we are in developing new drugs for their destruction. In addition, as ease of travel makes the world a “smaller” community, the rapidity with which life-threatening infectious diseases can spread has increased. Lastly, the threat of bioterrorism has created the need for increased research. Yale’s significant intellectual resources in this area have been marshaled to better understand how microorganisms interact with their hosts, how the immune system controls infections, and how viruses cause cancer. The end target is the development of new vaccines and antibiotic or antiviral drugs.
