While all disease is disheartening, it is always more heartbreaking when it occurs in children. Yale will continue to focus on diseases that affect children predominantly, investigating their mechanisms and developing approaches to diagnosis, prevention, and treatment. The medical school is home to the Yale Child Health Research Center, one of America’s premier pediatric research centers, where M.D. and Ph.D. scientists work to find causes and cures for illness affecting children and adolescents. Great progress has been made against once-deadly childhood diseases such as polio, measles, meningitis, childhood leukemia, and genetic disorders, and other cures are on the horizon.
