Yale Urban Teaching Initiative
$ 100,000 100 opportunities
To further strengthen Yale’s relationship with the New Haven Public Schools and to expand the University’s commitment to educating future teachers, Yale has recently created an exciting new degree program, the Yale Urban Teaching Initiative. Endowment of fellowships within this initiative is an important priority.
Under the Yale Teacher Preparation Program in the Yale Graduate School, ten students are selected each year to become Urban Teaching Fellows. The fellowship defrays the cost of tuition, while also providing students with a stipend for living expenses. At the end of the program, each student will make a three-year commitment to teach in the New Haven public school system and receive both a Connecticut Teaching Certificate for grades 7-12 and a Master of Arts in Urban Education Studies. The current shortage of highly qualified teachers in urban settings and the increasing importance of urban student achievement add urgency to this effort.
