Yale departments and The MacMillan Center now offer for-credit instruction in fifty-three languages and guided study in twenty less commonly taught languages. But instruction in the less commonly taught languages is frequently requested by undergraduate, graduate, and professional school students who seek to study original source materials in the Yale libraries or to travel for firsthand data collection and research. An endowment would provide funding for the center to respond to student demand by hiring additional language lectors to offer for-credit language instruction of the highest quality. A language study fund can be established with a preference for a specific language.
